One of the world’s richest fossil beds is in the rugged beauty South Dakota’s Badlands National Park. More than 244,000 acres protect prairie land where bison and bighorn sheep roam. And if you look closely, you’ll see the ferrets and prairie dogs that emerge from underground dens to play in the sun. Visitors also come for the layered rock formations, towering pinnacles and deep canyons. The South Unit of the park is co-managed with the Oglala Lakota tribe.
